Ragnarok is a glorious event if you happen to be a viking. The legends state that the Jotan will return to battle the gods of Asgard during the coldest winter, which is an event that will very likely destroy all of Midgard. What the frost giants failed to anticipate in their rampage was the clan of Ulfung, otherwise known as the Wolves of Midgard. The player assumes the role of the chief of this clan and naturally the chief is not thrilled with the destruction that has been wrought upon this clan of ostracized viking warriors. Turning one’s back to such a conflict is not an option for any viking, so the Ulfung chief leads the charge against the vile monstrosities of the Fimbulwinter.
Vikings – Wolves of Midgard is an isometric action RPG where the player controls a viking doing what vikings are best known for, which is charging into battle and hacking everything they encounter to death. The jotan, tompte, undead and other terrifying beasts of Ragnarok will be battled with traditional viking weapons such as swords, dual wielded axes, massive two handed hammers, and bow and arrows. Fantasy themed games like this are not anything new since the term Diablo clone is a thing but part of why so many of these games exist is because they tend to be a lot of fun and if the early build of Vikings is any indication this one is no different in that regard.
Vikings – Wolves of Midgard may not deviate in the sense it is a fun death fest but it does have enough unique qualities to provide a fresh experience to a familiar formula. The power up system is naturally based on Norse mythology, though some liberties may have been taken with it but we can forgive that since we forgave some other violent franchise for taking liberties with Greek mythology. The Art of Combat, for example, focuses on leveling up one’s skill with a particular weapon to unlock its true potential with additional special attacks. Tribute to the Gods involves collecting blood from your fallen foes and sacrificing it at the altar to enhance your own power through the gifts of the gods. The Power of the Gods allows you to equip talismans and amulets that have been infused with the (wait for it) powers of the gods, provided one proves themselves worthy. No viking game would be complete without including some berserker rage, which can be a lifesaver in perilous situations.

The setting is as harsh and unforgiving as the played character and their foes. The Fimbulwinter is unrelenting in its biting cold making it necessary to periodically find fire to keep oneself alive. The environments are filled with rocks and cliffs, which can be used to bury your enemies or knock them to their death. But within this deadly world there are power artifacts of legendary power, waiting to be discovered to aid you in your conquest of the jotans. And once you think you have mastered everything Ragnarok has thrown at you, the adventure can be replayed on New Game Plus to make your viking even more powerful.
