A New Craze
The City of Providence, Rhode Island, USA has an ice rink Downcity on Kennedy Plaza now called the Bank Newport Ice Arena. Our local news station featured a story about this two years ago when the City obtained bumper cars that actually run on ice! They look more like bumper boats than bumper cars—they’re single-seat round vehicles surrounded by a tire inner tube, running on electric motors with mini wheels below.
The Providence Rink
The rink also (obviously) features ice skating, so in order to make room for people on skates, bumper cars are limited during skating hours to using just 1/3rd of the ice. Having been to the rink, it is still probably enough space, given that there are only 10 cars on the ice at a time. If you want the full-ice experience, like us, your opportunities are limited to weekends between 9-10am, or late night between 10-11pm. The rates are fairly comparable—it costs $12 USD/ticket for 1/3rd ice and $15 USD/ticket for full ice. They schedule only one launch every twenty minutes, so as you might imagine, space is VERY limited. My recommendation is that if you want to book a car, book it early!
Advanced Reservations Required
I tried booking bumper cars for us last winter break (since you must make reservations in advance), but to no avail. There were simply no timeslots with any openings—at least not during kid-friendly hours, and certainly not during the times when school-aged children were scheduled to be on break. The bumper cars on ice are just too popular!
Recommendation: Don’t hesitate!
Given my history of failing to score tickets the first two seasons, I considered making reservations in October. Of course I didn’t actually check availability until Thanksgiving weekend. When I finally logged-in to the booking calendar determine what ice time may be available, I was disappointed. I discovered that there was only one timeslot left for winter break! Realizing that this may be the only time to find a kid-friendly full-ice slot all winter, I bought the one remaining ticket on sale!
Parking
Parking was easy today. I just pulled into a metered space across from Kennedy Plaza on Exchange Terrace, close to Koto Asian Cuisine. On Sunday mornings, it’s simple to find available parking there or on Dorrance Street. I cannot speak to the ease of Saturday parking. Having worked in Providence for many years, I can tell you that if you’re going on a weekday, it’s a different story. You might want to park in the Garage at 5 Memorial Blvd, adjacent to Union Station Brewery. Another choice is the Biltmore Garage at 51 Washington Street. Either of those locations are an easy block and a half walk to the rink. If you find those lots are full, you can park at the RI Convention Center or at the Providence Place Mall. Just remember to wear your warm and woolies because it may be a bit of a windy walk!
How cold is it?
The climate in Providence varies all year, featuring all four seasons. The summers can get as hot as 100 degrees Fahrenheit, and winter temps can fall below 0 degrees. You should plan to dress for very cold weather—in layers so you can stay warm, but if the temps climb, you can strip down accordingly. It’s easy to stay warm in the Pavillion while waiting for your turn to bump.
I stood outside to watch and take photos while he bumped his way around the rink. By the time his twenty minutes were up, we were ready to warm ourselves with a hot drink. I drove us down the road to the Downcity Dunkin Donuts, where he enjoyed a hot cocoa and I grabbed a holiday egg nog latte. Delish!
Bumper Cars On Ice Mac Os X
Hours later I asked Munch, “On a scale from one to ten, with ten being the highest, how would you rate the Providence Rink bumper cars on ice?” He said, “I’d give it a solid 10 because it was soooo fun!” There you have it, folks! Run, don’t walk, to reserve your tickets today.
